Our Union
We are UHEW Local 70008, part of the Union of Health and Environment Workers (UHEW)—a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) in the National Capital Region (NCR). UHEW was formed through the merger of the National Health Union (NHU) and the Union of Environment Workers (UEW), combining strong legacies of advocacy, solidarity, and service.
Local 70008 is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting the rights, interests, and well-being of our members employed at Health Canada, Indigenous Service Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada within the Health Portfolio across the Ottawa area.
With over 2,000 members, Local 70008 is one of the largest locals within PSAC. Our members work in diverse roles supporting public health, policy, science, and environmental protection across the federal public service.
Our Structure
Local 70008 is governed by an elected executive, which includes a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and three chief shop stewards.
These elected officials—all volunteers—are responsible for representing members, promoting fair treatment, improving workplace conditions, and ensuring a safe and respectful work environment.
Beyond the Executive, many non-elected volunteers serve as Stewards and Building Representatives, offering frontline support and guidance to members across the Health Portfolio.

Our members
- Establish local by laws and determine the local's portion of union dues.
